Add ‘Flexibility and Functionality’ to GCSEs

English and maths GCSEs need more flexibility and functionality according to the head of careers guidance at Ofsted. Karen Adriaanse made the comments during the House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee’s second session on adult literacy and numeracy.

Adriaanse stated that she thought it was a positive thing that the government had begun to raise the profile of English and maths on a national scale. However she recognised that change needs to take place in relation to teaching English and maths to adults – more support should be offered to tutors to ensure that they have the expertise to motivate.

In terms of the GCSE qualifications themselves, she cited a need for flexibility in assessment procedures and functionality in content, stating that this would help to uphold the notion that GCSEs are a qualification for adults too, and not just for schoolchildren.
