Significant Grant for New Adult Maths and English Research Facility

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has pledged a grant of £2.9 million for a new Adult Literacy and Numeracy Centre. The announcement was made at the latest BIS Select Committee Hearing by Skills Minister Matthew Hancock.

The Behavioural Insights Research Centre for Maths and English will assist in discovering the most effective ways to motivate people to up-skill their English and maths. During the announcement Mr Hancock stated that the centre will allow the government to help high numbers of people to reach their potential, by bringing world leading academics together with the brightest policy makers. These researchers will investigate how adults best gain skills in maths and English.

The news of the grant, which will be paid over a three year period, was well received by a number of organisations including the Association of Colleges (AOC), the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) and the National Union of Students (NUS).
